Google is betting on the "Land of a Thousand Lakes\." The tech giant has[announced](https://www.wsj.com/business/google-to-invest-15-billion-in-data-centers-and-infrastructure-in-finland-335c5ee2)plans to invest at least $15 billion in data centers and other AI infrastructure in Finland through 2028\. It’s the company’s largest single investment in Europe, following similar moves by[Amazon](https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/amazon-pledges-nearly-40-billion-to-expand-ai-data-center-infrastructure-in-spain-7746166a)and[Microsoft](https://www.wsj.com/tech/microsoft-will-invest-30-billion-in-ai-infrastructure-operations-across-u-k-5099a7be?mod=article_inline)over the past year\. Per[Reuters,](https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/google-invest-15-billion-ai-infrastructure-finland-2026-09-09/)freezing Nordic climates are appealing when it comes to building massive data centers, which require continuous cooling\. Google has also signed a 22\-year[power purchase agreement](https://www.googlecloudpresscorner.com/2026-09-09-Google-Deepens-Commitment-to-Finland-with-Two-Year-EUR13-Billion-investment-in-AI-Infrastructure)to support one of Finland’s nuclear power plants\.

## Editors’ Picks
---
1. Finland has been a home for Google since we opened our Hamina data center more than 15 years ago\. Today we've announced that we are deepening our commitment in Finland with a €13 billion investment over the next two years in digital infrastructure, clean energy projects and economic partnerships\. This expansion across Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala will power core services that people and businesses use every day like Google Cloud, Search, and Maps\. We are pairing our investment with clean energy solutions: an agreement with[Fortum](https://fi.linkedin.com/company/fortum?trk=news_storyline_guest-text)to support the Loviisa nuclear power plant through 2050, new onshore wind capacity, and grid\-scale battery storage to ensure energy remains reliable and affordable for local communities\. We're also investing €31 million into local communities over the next four years to support education and economic growth\. This includes teaming up with local colleges to offer tech upskilling programs for 4000\+ workers\. Grateful to Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, our energy and local partners, and our teams on the ground who are demonstrating how data centers are done responsibly, in partnership with communities, bringing net new and clean energy to the grid\. 2. The next geopolitical choke point is not the chip foundry\. It is the baseload generator\. When AI models consume sovereign electricity reserves, software development crosses directly into critical infrastructure risk\. Alphabet’s €13 billion \($15\.1B\) infrastructure push in Finland, anchored by a 22\-year deal absorbing up to 50% of the Loviisa nuclear plant capacity, triggered immediate opposition pushback\. Finnish lawmakers are already calling for national permitting controls, explicitly framing grid capacity not as a commercial utility issue, but as a matter of internal security\. Why this matters: This is not an isolated Nordic squabble\. It is the leading edge of a global collision between physical power limits and unchecked model scaling\. Here are some telling data points:**Half of All New US Load Growth:**The**IEA**estimates data centers will drive nearly 50% of all net US electricity demand growth through 2030\.**Consuming Up to 17% of Domestic Power:**Recent**EPRI**analysis projects data centers could swallow 9% to 17% of total US electricity generation by 2030, with key states exceeding 20% to 40%\.**Global Baseload Doubling:**The**United Nations**and IEA warn global data center consumption will double from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh by 2030—rivaling the entire annual energy demand of Japan\.**Compute Power Overtaking IT:****Gartner**projects data center power demand jumps 26% this year to 565 TWh, with AI server loads surpassing conventional workloads by 2027\.**The Behind\-the\-Meter Regulatory Trap:**In the US,**FERC**is intervening in co\-located nuclear arrangements, requiring regional grid operators to reform tariffs so enterprise compute does not shift reliability costs onto public ratepayers\. Data center footprint is the new geopolitical choke point\. In a winner\-takes\-all arms race between OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Alphabet, and NVIDIA, compute hoarding has moved from buying silicon to monopolizing national baseloads\. We cannot allow the race for AGI and quantum acceleration to run like a modern\-day Manhattan Project which was conducted behind corporate walls, straining public resources, and scaling past physical safety boundaries without oversight\. If enterprise scaling continues unchecked, who is actually governing the physical blast radius? And when deterministic runtime failures cascade across autonomous systems, who holds the kill switch?[\#AIGovernance](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Faigovernance&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#CriticalInfrastructure](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fcriticalinfrastructure&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#EnergyTransition](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fenergytransition&trk=news_storyline_guest-text) [https://www.linkedin.com/redir/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ereuters%2Ecom%2Fbusiness%2Fmedia-telecom%2Ffinland-risks-strained-power-supply-after-google-ai-deal-opposition-warns-2026-09-10%2F&urlhash=HMuo&trk=news_storyline_guest_feed-article-content](https://www.linkedin.com/redir/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ereuters%2Ecom%2Fbusiness%2Fmedia-telecom%2Ffinland-risks-strained-power-supply-after-google-ai-deal-opposition-warns-2026-09-10%2F&urlhash=HMuo&trk=news_storyline_guest_feed-article-content) [Finland risks strained power supply after Google AI deal, opposition warnsreuters\.com](https://www.linkedin.com/redir/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ereuters%2Ecom%2Fbusiness%2Fmedia-telecom%2Ffinland-risks-strained-power-supply-after-google-ai-deal-opposition-warns-2026-09-10%2F&urlhash=HMuo&trk=news_storyline_guest_feed-article-content) [https://www.linkedin.com/redir/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ereuters%2Ecom%2Fbusiness%2Fmedia-telecom%2Ffinland-risks-strained-power-supply-after-google-ai-deal-opposition-warns-2026-09-10%2F&urlhash=HMuo&trk=news_storyline_guest_feed-article-content](https://www.linkedin.com/redir/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ereuters%2Ecom%2Fbusiness%2Fmedia-telecom%2Ffinland-risks-strained-power-supply-after-google-ai-deal-opposition-warns-2026-09-10%2F&urlhash=HMuo&trk=news_storyline_guest_feed-article-content)
3. [Google Cloud](https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/google-cloud/?trk=news_storyline_guest-text)is developing a new[\#datacenter](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fdatacenter&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)in Finland with a 13B Euro investment\. This is big news for several reasons\. First, one of the primary limiting factors to building out new data centers is availability of electricity to power them\. Any location that has access to abundant and relatively inexpensive power is a golden spot for new data centers\. So, this means that we should expect to see datacenters built where power is readily available\. But it also requires cooling \(water\) so that is also a restriction\. Finland has abundant power being generated by nuclear power plants, and has sufficient cooling capability\. Further, it has a highly educated workforce that can run the datacenter, and has some major companies that will utilize the computing resources\. And geographic distribution of compute resources is an advantage for Google, and also provides an ability to run localized AI models from European suppliers \(e\.g\.,[Mistral](https://fr.linkedin.com/company/mistralai?trk=news_storyline_guest-text)l\) and support the emerging AI ecosystem in Europe\. But this build out is also about having a European sovereign datacenter that Google provides to localized users who don’t want to have their data travel to the US or other territories\. This is no small issue, as increasingly the EU is hesitant to have data stored in the US given all of the potential roadblocks and often changing political dynamics of the current administration\. You can't embargo a datacenter \(or its data\) that isn't in your administrative area\. This is both a win for Google as well as the tech scene in Finland\. 4. A few months ago I moved from renewable energy into data centre construction in Finland\. Today's news makes that decision feel even more right\. €13 billion from Google, their largest single investment in Europe, with new data centres, a Hamina expansion and thousands of construction jobs ahead\. Finland keeps pulling ahead of the rest of the Nordics for a reason\. A cold climate that cuts cooling demand, one of the cleanest energy grids in the world, strong grid stability, and server heat that gets recovered to warm local homes\. Add political stability and available land, and it becomes the natural home for hyperscale infrastructure in Europe\. For those of us in CSA and mission critical delivery here, the years ahead look genuinely exciting\.[\#DataCentre](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fdatacentre&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#Construction](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fconstruction&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#CSA](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fcsa&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#Finland](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Ffinland&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#DigitalInfrastructure](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fdigitalinfrastructure&trk=news_storyline_guest-text) [https://fi.linkedin.com/in/janne-lindfors-5923a84b?trk=news_storyline_guest_reshare_feed-actor-image](https://fi.linkedin.com/in/janne-lindfors-5923a84b?trk=news_storyline_guest_reshare_feed-actor-image)Logistics Area Manager EU North \- Google Cloud Logistics 1d [Google](https://www.linkedin.com/company/google?trk=news_storyline_guest_reshare-text)today announced plans to invest €13 billion in new digital infrastructure in Finland over the next two years — marking our largest single investment in Europe to date\. 5. Google's latest announcement in Finland caught my attention, not because of the size of the investment, but because of what it says about where AI infrastructure is heading\. What stands out is that Google is not looking at data centres, power generation, storage, grid capacity and demand flexibility as separate challenges\. It is treating them as parts of the same system\. That feels like an important shift\. For years, the industry has largely started with the question: where can we build a data centre? Then the race begins to secure power, transmission upgrades and supporting infrastructure\. Increasingly, I think that's the wrong way around\. The reality is that AI is becoming a power problem as much as a compute problem\. Google's work in Finland reflects that\. New wind generation, battery storage, support for nuclear power, demand\-response programmes and coordinated planning with grid operators are all being developed alongside infrastructure growth\. The lesson isn't really about Finland\. It's about recognising that energy availability is becoming the primary constraint on AI expansion\. That thinking has shaped how we've approached TriNeo Energy\. From the beginning, we've believed the next generation of AI and hyperscale infrastructure will require more than land and a grid connection\. The winners will be those who can bring together generation, storage, reliability, interconnection, fibre and future compute demand into a single development strategy\. That's exactly what we're doing at[TriNeo Energy Inc](https://www.linkedin.com/company/trineo-energy?trk=news_storyline_guest-text)\. At our Kentucky site, we've assembled more than 2,200 acres in Lee County, anchored by 500 MW of solar generation, 500 MW of battery storage and 500 MW of reliability generation\. Existing gas and fibre infrastructure are already in place, while utility and interconnection planning continues to advance\. What I find most compelling about this approach is that we're starting with the energy platform rather than waiting for power to catch up later\. Instead of asking where a data centre can be built, we're asking where large\-scale power can be delivered, how quickly it can be expanded and how much future growth it can support\. That is why I often describe our philosophy as: Power First\. Compute Second\. We're not trying to build another data\-centre company\. We're focused on building the energy infrastructure layer underneath the AI economy, creating locations where AI and other energy\-intensive industries can scale faster because the power strategy was considered from day one\. Looking at what Google is doing, I think the market is moving in the same direction\. Energy strategy and AI strategy are no longer separate conversations\. They're becoming the same conversation\. And as AI scales, the most valuable question may not be where we can build the next data centre, but where we can deliver the power required to run it and continue scaling it for decades to come\.[\#AIInfrastructure](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Faiinfrastructure&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#DataCenters](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fdatacenters&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#EnergyInfrastructure](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fenergyinfrastructure&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#RenewableEnergy](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Frenewableenergy&trk=news_storyline_guest-text)[\#Hyperscale](https://www.linkedin.com/login?session_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fhashtag%2Fhyperscale&trk=news_storyline_guest-text) [https://uk.linkedin.com/in/aris-karcanias-49aa4013?trk=news_storyline_guest_reshare_feed-actor-image](https://uk.linkedin.com/in/aris-karcanias-49aa4013?trk=news_storyline_guest_reshare_feed-actor-image)Google, EMEA Energy & Infrastructure 1dEdited How do we scale AI infrastructure the right way? I’m particularly proud that this investment serves as a blueprint for an approach we call “responsible execution, done right” because it delivers energy capacity, protects energy affordability, and supports economic opportunity and community development\. In Finland, we also shared how we design investments to build upon existing assets in a way that enhances local communities\. Specifically, this investment includes Google’s first nuclear energy deal outside of the US through an agreement with[Fortum](https://fi.linkedin.com/company/fortum?trk=news_storyline_guest-text)which will extend the life of the Loviisa nuclear power plant – in turn providing job security for its workforce and helping to stabilize electricity prices for the Finnish people\.
