If an AI agent completes the sale outside the store, what should the merchant actually trust?

Summary

The article discusses merchants' challenges in trusting the economics of AI agent-driven sales on Meta surfaces, highlighting the need for improved order attribution and margin analysis when checkout occurs outside their usual analytics.

I’ve been thinking about this from the merchant side. Shopify is now letting some purchases happen directly on Meta surfaces. The order still lands in Shopify, but the usual browser analytics don’t see the whole checkout. That feels like a weird problem. You know the sale happened, but you may know less about the path that created it. If you were running the store, what would you want to see before deciding this channel is actually worth scaling? Order attribution? Margin after fees and returns? Some way to connect the agent interaction back to the order? I’m less interested in whether agents can buy. I’m more interested in what evidence a merchant needs before trusting the economics.
