The US government wants to keep Chinese ones from entering the country. They’re the first consumer gadgets that are facing de facto import bans because of the US government’s xenophobic stance — and they might not be the last.

Originally, the US government was just worried about US networks. It’s been distrustful of Chinese telecom equipment providers Huawei and ZTE for well over a decade, eventually requiring telecom providers to “rip and replace” their gear. (Many telecoms have still failed to do so.) It established an “Entity List” for companies whose gear should be banned from import, marketing, and sale.

But under the second Trump administration, that list has been weaponized against entire home consumer gadget categories too — starting in December 2025 when Trump and Brendan Carr’s FCC banned all future foreign drones unless their companies obtained a waiver.

Next was a ban on all future foreign routers, all future foreign robots and power inverters, and within the robot ban, all future foreign robovacs. In each case, the government claims it’s because those gadgets fundamentally pose an unacceptable threat to US national security. But in each case, the US has provided zero public evidence of a threat, has done nothing about existing drones and routers and robots that might pose such a threat, and hasn’t given us any reason to trust that its waivers have anything to do with security.

Besides, there are rarely any US companies to fill the gaps left by foreign ones. # Foreign gadget bans: all the news about the FCC’s clampdown on Chinese tech Source: [https://www.theverge.com/policy/1019851/fcc-foreign-gadget-ban-drone-robot-roomba-storystream](https://www.theverge.com/policy/1019851/fcc-foreign-gadget-ban-drone-robot-roomba-storystream) What do[drones](https://www.theverge.com/report/969725/fcc-drone-ban-odyssey-robot-galiview-etak-randolph-howard-eason),[routers](https://www.theverge.com/tech/899906/fcc-router-ban-march-2026-explainer), and[Roombas](https://www.theverge.com/policy/972312/us-robot-ban-sweep-up-chinese-vacuums)have in common? The US government wants to keep Chinese ones from entering the country\. They’re the first consumer gadgets that are facing de facto import bans because of the US government’s xenophobic stance — and they might not be the last\. Originally, the US government was just worried about US networks\. It’s been distrustful of Chinese telecom equipment providers Huawei and ZTE for[well over a decade](https://www.theverge.com/2012/10/8/3472316/huawei-zte-china-spying-house-intelligence-committee), eventually requiring telecom providers to[“rip and replace” their gear](https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/2/24147499/fcc-huawei-zte-rip-and-replace-funding-isps)\. \(Many telecoms have[still failed to do so](https://www.lightreading.com/regulatory-politics/more-telcos-struggle-to-meet-rip-and-replace-deadlines)\.\) It established an “Entity List” for companies whose gear should be banned from import, marketing, and sale\. But under the second Trump administration, that list has been weaponized against entire home consumer gadget categories too — starting in December 2025 when Trump and Brendan Carr’s FCC banned all future foreign drones unless their companies obtained a waiver\. Next was a ban on all future foreign routers, all[future foreign robots and power inverters](https://www.theverge.com/tech/972259/us-foreign-robots-power-inverter-ban), and within the robot ban, all future foreign robovacs\. In each case, the government claims it’s because those gadgets fundamentally pose an unacceptable threat to US national security\. But in each case, the US has provided zero public evidence of a threat, has done nothing about*existing*drones and routers[and robots](https://www.theverge.com/tech/925696/yarbo-robot-lawn-mower-hack-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt)that might pose such a threat, and hasn’t given us any reason to trust that its waivers[have anything to do with security](https://www.theverge.com/tech/899906/fcc-router-ban-march-2026-explainer)\. Besides, there are rarely any US companies to fill the gaps left by foreign ones\. Consumer gadgets are largely made overseas, including practically all routers and practically all drones — just like how your Apple, Dell, and HP laptops are not made in the US\. In this StoryStream, we’re following the latest on the foreign gadget bans\. ## Highlights - [Will TP\-Link really make routers in the US? Here’s what it told us](https://www.theverge.com/policy/1013807/tp-link-router-us-onshoring-manufacturing-assembly-interview) ![tp-link-wifi-8](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/tp-link-wifi-8.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400) ![tp-link-wifi-8](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/tp-link-wifi-8.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400) TP\-Link, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of consumer Wi\-Fi routers, is in a precarious position in the US\. The company just launched[its first Wi\-Fi 8 routers](https://tplinksystemsinc.sjv.io/c/482924/3280858/42255?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tp-link.com%2Fus%2Fpress%2Fnews%2F22555%2F), but can’t bring them here because of President Donald Trump’s[foreign router ban](https://www.theverge.com/tech/899906/fcc-router-ban-march-2026-explainer)\. Even though competitors Netgear and Asus make their routers in Asia,[they’ve mysteriously obtained blanket waivers for all their new gear](https://www.theverge.com/policy/1002504/asus-escape-us-router-ban-us-manufacturing); perhaps because of[alleged ties to China](https://www.theverge.com/tech/881500/texas-tp-link-china-lawsuit-anzu-robotics), TP\-Link hasn’t managed to get such a waiver yet\. But TP\-Link is willing to do something those companies weren’t — to invest nearly $1 billion to make routers*in the United States*, creating “hundreds of high\-paying research and development, manufacturing, and construction jobs for American workers over the next four years,” according to a letter TP\-Link sent to the FCC\. [Read Article \>](https://www.theverge.com/policy/1013807/tp-link-router-us-onshoring-manufacturing-assembly-interview) - ![Sean Hollister](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/01/Sean_BLURPLE.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400) Another ‘DJI front company’ bites the dust\. In July, we told you how the FCC — and its subcontractor TÜV Rheinland —[didn’t bother to do basic Google searches](https://www.theverge.com/report/969725/fcc-drone-ban-odyssey-robot-galiview-etak-randolph-howard-eason)before legally approving banned DJI technology for import and sale\. But a new game of whack\-a\-drone was more successful\.[Public records show](https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewCorrespondenceReport.cfm?calledFromFrame=Y&RequestTimeout=500&application_id=2JPnQ3hX4EvDffxyClevWw%3D%3D&fcc_id=2BRGW-FKAWZJO)TÜV Rheinland asked the FCC to block applications from another “DJI front company,” Jovistar\. The FCC agreed, and Jovistar is now on notice\. [![The Jovistar drone.](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/chrome_dCyKFX2qSh.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400)](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/chrome_dCyKFX2qSh.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0,0,100,100) - ![Sean Hollister](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/01/Sean_BLURPLE.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400) It sure would be nice if these congresspeople would say why DJI is a threat\. The FCC[would like you to know](https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-1106A1.pdf)that[its DJI ban](https://www.theverge.com/news/831241/dji-ban-us-trump-fcc-customs-import-ndaa)is justified — because of the contents of sealed letters from the Pentagon that it has[now forwarded to 16 congresspeople](https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/26110081553/1)\. Do they know something they’re not saying out loud? So far, the government hasn’t revealed a single shred of public evidence about a national security threat\. - ![Sean Hollister](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/01/Sean_BLURPLE.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400) Unlike Netgear and Asus, TP\-Link says it’s prepared to spend $1 billion to make Wi\-Fi routers in the US\. “TP\-Link would begin assembling these Wi\-Fi 8 devices in the United States by next year,” it claims[in a letter to the FCC](https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/26110081141/1)— if the FCC will exempt its routers from[the foreign router ban](https://www.theverge.com/tech/899906/fcc-router-ban-march-2026-explainer)\. Notably,[both Netgear](https://www.theverge.com/tech/911888/netgear-router-ban-conditional-approval)[and Asus](https://www.theverge.com/policy/1002504/asus-escape-us-router-ban-us-manufacturing)got exemptions*without*promising to make routers in the US, even though the FCC’s paperwork requires companies to commit to US manufacturing to get that exemption\. - ![Sean Hollister](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/01/Sean_BLURPLE.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400) The FCC plans to ban all Chinese labs from testing US gadgets by 2029\. The FCC has been[cracking down on some Chinese test labs](https://www.theverge.com/policy/1005858/the-fcc-has-decertified-two-more-chinese-test-labs)that improperly helped authorize gadgets for import into the US — now, it wants to get rid of Chinese labs altogether starting December 2028, only authorizing labs if they have a reciprocal economic relationship with the US\. It’ll vote on October 29th; you can[read the whole argument here](https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-425721A1.pdf)\.
