Claude Code filled almost my entire SSD with random nonsense overnight

Last night I gave Claude Code a task and went to sleep, forgetting that it was still running. ​ When I woke up, my PC felt unusually slow. I checked my storage and somehow my 632 GB SSD was almost completely full. ​ I started investigating because I thought I had malware. Instead, I found thousands of text files spread across multiple folders. ​ The weird part? The files weren't logs, code, or useful output. Most of them were just endless walls of random characters. Imagine opening Notepad and seeing pages of stuff like: ​ "JFKDJSKDKSKDKDKSKSKDKDJSKSKDKDKDKSKS" ​ repeated millions of times. ​ Some files were several gigabytes each. Claude had apparently spent the entire night generating what can only be described as digital keyboard smashing. ​ After deleting everything, I recovered hundreds of gigabytes. ​ I'm still trying to understand what chain of reasoning led an AI coding assistant to conclude that filling my SSD with nonsense text was a productive use of its time. ​ Has anyone else had an AI agent fail this spectacularly?
