# Here’s how macOS is changing for touchscreens Source: [https://www.theverge.com/tech/1020084/macos-touchscreen-changes](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1020084/macos-touchscreen-changes) Touchscreen laptops[are nothing new in the Windows world](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1019288/apple-event-la-macbook-pro-touchscreen-questions), but Apple has only just announced its first MacBook with a touchscreen\. Apple isn’t rushing to change a bunch of things in macOS to optimize for touch, though: Most of the touch action will be in the apps themselves, it seems\. As far as major macOS changes go, iOS’s Dynamic Island will debut on the new MacBook Pro, and Apple touts the added touch controls as particularly useful for interacting with the interface to accept AirDrops and pause music playback\. Otherwise, Apple[gives some pretty predictable ways](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/10/apple-unveils-groundbreaking-macbook-pro-with-proled-xdr-display/)that the touch input will work with the new MacBook Pro\. Gestures you could use with the trackpad, like swiping from the right edge to show the notification center, have been translated to the touch display\. The system will also magnify drop down menu options and the traffic light window controls when you tap them to create bigger targets\. Other than that, you’ll be able to pinch and zoom in on photos, drag and drop slides between two different presentations, and swipe to scroll through webpages\. Which, yeah\. That’s how touchscreens work\. [![The green plus icon magnified when touching the display of the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR.](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/268836_MacBook_Pro_touchscreen_OLED_handson_ADiBenedetto_0014.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=2400)](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/268836_MacBook_Pro_touchscreen_OLED_handson_ADiBenedetto_0014.jpg?quality=90&strip=all) [![The Dynamic Island comes to the MacBook Pro.](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/268836_MacBook_Pro_touchscreen_OLED_handson_ADiBenedetto_0015.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=2400)](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/268836_MacBook_Pro_touchscreen_OLED_handson_ADiBenedetto_0015.jpg?quality=90&strip=all) **1/2** Some UI elements will be magnified when you touch them\.Photo: Antonio G\. Di Benedetto / The Verge The more interesting stuff will probably happen in individual apps\. Unsurprisingly, Apple’s apps will already be “optimized” for touch, and the system will automatically translate touches into clicks\. Apart from that, Apple lists a handful of third\-party apps that will take advantage of the new touch controls, including Notion, Canva, Zoom, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Lightroom, and DaVinci Resolve\. Adding the possibility of multitouch to some of these pro creator apps is interesting, but for the most part, it seems that touch will merely be a secondary input mechanism rather than a whole new way of interacting with the entire system\. You’ll be able to double tap to make a window full screen the way you can with a double click, and you can drag the corner of a window to resize it\. [![An image demonstrates multitouch on the MacBook Pro, with a set of hands pinching and touching the screen.](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/Screenshot-2026-10-28-at-1.34.51-PM.png?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0%2C0%2C100%2C100&w=2400)](https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/Screenshot-2026-10-28-at-1.34.51-PM.png?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0,0,100,100) All told, this is shaping up to be a year of interesting hardware moves from Apple\. The company just launched its first folding phone in the form of the iPhone Duo, with preorders backed up into 2027\. Earlier this fall the company[also launched the HomeView](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1009704/apple-homeview-smart-display-first-look), its first display for the smart home\. And it’s been an equally spicy software story for Apple this year, too\. The Apple Watch is about to[take its first steps](https://www.theverge.com/tech/991812/apple-watch-series-12-announcement)into[the land of wearable surveillance](https://www.theverge.com/tech/999889/spy-creep-tech-meta-glasses-apple-watches-surveillance),[Siri is actually kinda good again](https://www.theverge.com/tech/947432/siri-ai-apple-intelligence-ios-27-wwdc), and MacOS scored an easy win just by[dialing down the Liquid Glass effect](https://www.theverge.com/tech/946567/apple-macos-27-golden-gate-dev-beta-hands-on)\. Why*not*throw in a touchscreen MacBook and a touch\-optimized MacOS at this point?[The Ternus era](https://www.theverge.com/tech/915272/apple-john-ternus-tim-cook)is off to a running start\. ***Update October 28th:**Added more details about interacting with window resizing controls and drop down menus\.* **Follow topics and authors**from this story to see more like this in your personalized homepage feed and to receive email updates\. - Allison Johnson
