One Chinese city is getting nearly 90 data centers.
Ulanqab, on the edge of the Gobi desert, has fewer than two million people.
CNN just reported from there. One data center park in the city, Bayin, was mostly built in just two years. And in China, CNN says, public opposition to data centers is “non-existent.”
In the US, that opposition is on the ballot. Voters decide 34 data center measures on November 3, and Texas has stopped issuing data center permits until the state audits its grid and water.
Jensen Huang warned about this gap last December. A data center in the US takes about three years from breaking ground, he told CSIS. In China, “they can build a hospital in a weekend.”
I’ve seen that speed in Chongqing. The railway station is so modern, and the whole city is built into mountains. I still don’t get how the fuck these guys build like that.
For now, the US still has roughly 10 times more AI data centers than China, according to Stanford research. But Jensen also said China has twice America’s energy and discounts it 50% for chip companies.
BRICS News (@BRICSinfo): JUST IN: 🇨🇳🇺🇸 China is rapidly building data centers while the US is fighting over their construction, CNN reports.
