it’s so cool reading about the industrial revolution and seeing the parallels to the AI revolution today.
you could literally just swap a few words and the whole thing reads like an AI article in 2026:
a powerful new technology arrives. for the first time, machines can do the physical work that used to need human hands.
everyone rushes to build with it. factories and mills go up in every town.
the capital expenditure on the buildout is staggering.
by 1897 the railroads are worth $10.6 billion, nine times the entire national debt, bankrolled by Wall Street and waves of outside investors.
the biggest fortunes go to whoever owns the infrastructure it all runs on: the railroads, the oil refineries, the steel mills.
men like Rockefeller and Carnegie control that infrastructure. every business in the country has to pay to use it.
they become the richest people on earth.
the public is terrified. workers smash the machines in the streets, convinced the technology will take their jobs. critics warn it will hollow out society.
and through all of it, the machines are doing one thing: automating physical work.

one machine does the work of hundreds of people.
