At the AI Engineer Singapore talk, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan discussed how he built his own AI assistant to organize, quickly search, and support analysis, offloading the heavy information processing so that people can focus on judgment and decision-making. He summarized three points: memory and computation can be handed over to tools, but understanding cannot; the real value lies in people who know their work using AI to reorganize and transform processes; and now, the barrier to using these tools has been greatly lowered. Originally an ophthalmologist before entering politics and later leading Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative, he noted, “You can’t just hear a technology report and think you can manage it well.” AI is no longer exclusive to engineers—the 65-year-old minister is leading by example in learning and applying it.
