During Intel’s latest[earnings call](https://edge.media-server.com/mmc/p/wmusrcit/), CEO Lip\-Bu Tan said that demand for its[budget\-focused Wildcat Lake chips](https://www.theverge.com/tech/913026/intel-core-series-3-panther-lake-18a-budget-chips-specs)“is outstripping supply\.” According to CFO David Zinsner, the chips are now sold out\. Zinsner said Intel has “seen significant growth in Wildcat Lake\. It’s coming exactly at the right time because it’s cost\-optimized and we’re seeing a lot of focus in that regard\.”
As[shortages of RAM](https://www.theverge.com/news/839353/pc-ram-shortage-pricing-spike-news)and other components have driven up PC prices over recent months, Intel’s Wildcat Lake chips have been appearing in new lower\-cost Windows laptops on par with the MacBook Neo, like the new[Dell XPS 13](https://www.theverge.com/tech/994636/dell-xps-13-2026-intel-wildcat-lake-8gb-16gb-review)or the[HP Omnibook 5 14](https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/1003107/hp-omnibook-5-14-intel-wildcat-lake-8gb-macbook-neo-price-specs)\. Wildcat Lake laptops like these have budget\-friendly starting prices, but often with just 8GB of RAM, which Windows laptops can[struggle to get by](https://www.theverge.com/tech/966937/microsoft-surface-laptop-13-inch-8gb-ram-2026-review)on\.
Intel doesn’t expect the memory shortage to improve any time soon\. Zinsner responded to a question about memory supply, saying, “Make no mistake, we are not optimistic about next year in terms of memory\.” He added, “we’ll, you know, have to see in ‘28 whether things improve, but our expectation is that it does not improve in ‘27\.” That’s more optimistic than[SK Hynix’s prediction](https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/1020395/sk-hynix-says-memory-shortages-will-last-through-2030)that the RAM shortage will drag on through 2030\.
Tan also acknowledged[the PC demand slowdown](https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/1017144/global-pc-shipments-dropped-q3-2026-ram), saying, “The industry continues to navigate one of the most significant supply shortages in the \[sic\] history, driven by the unprecedented demand for super intelligence,”[referring to AI](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/998816/donald-trump-ai-super-intelligence)\. Zinsner went on to respond to a question during the earnings call, saying, “We do think the PC is going to go through a renaissance despite this\.”

Global RAM manufacturers are expected to meet only 60% of demand by end of 2027, with shortages potentially lasting until 2030, as chipmakers prioritize high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers over consumer electronics. Price increases are already affecting phones, laptops, VR headsets, and gaming devices.
The article predicts that due to a surge in AI agent demand, high-end CPUs will experience a structural shortage within 2-3 quarters, leading to significant price increases, similar to the storage market trend in 2026.
Intel announces its upcoming Crescent Island AI chip, designed for inference tasks, which will be cheaper and air-cooled compared to Nvidia and AMD offerings, aiming to ship by end of year.
Micron and Samsung executives say the memory shortage, driven by surging AI demand for HBM and server DRAM, will persist through 2028, with production capacity prioritized for AI over consumer devices.
Intel's stock crashed around 28% after a weaker-than-expected Q4 outlook, wiping $12 billion from the U.S. government's 10% stake amid AI-driven memory shortages pressuring PC sales.
