Gabriel Petersson, a self-taught Swedish young man and former research scientist on OpenAI’s video generation model Sora team, announced his departure from OpenAI. Petersson stated that he left OpenAI to start his own business, planning to build his last product before the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI), and loudly declared entering “FOUNDER MODE”.

Petersson was born in a remote village in Sweden that is hard to find on a map. He dropped out of high school at the age of 17, and even considered himself dull because he couldn’t understand machine learning courses. However, he abandoned the traditional academic path from bachelor’s to postdoctoral research, and instead used a top-down self-learning method by asking ChatGPT high-frequency questions daily, quickly mastering machine learning and front-end engineering development.

During his job search, to avoid his resume being filtered out due to lack of academic credentials, Petersson adopted a demo-driven strategy that bypassed the standard recruitment process. He independently developed high-performance web image grid and table components targeting the pain points of Midjourney and Dataland products, successfully impressing the founders, and subsequently joined two top teams. At the end of 2024, at just 22 years old, Petersson joined OpenAI as a research scientist, participating in the core development of the Sora model.

As OpenAI shut down further development of Sora in March 2026 due to considerations such as computing costs, core creators of the team and several researchers have been leaving gradually since spring. Earlier this year, Petersson shifted from Sora to form a new team within OpenAI, but after just a few months, he decided to completely leave the top lab and re-enter the startup ecosystem as a founder.
