“I don’t live in EU, why should I have my AI output watermarked?”
because EU law basically says: you can generate a text in your cozy SF cafe, but if it gets used in EU, some dude there must be able to detect if it was AI.

Andrew Curran (@AndrewCurran_): Any new model released after August 2nd 2026 must make its generated text detectable under Article 50(2) of the EU AI Act. OpenAI has publicly said they intend to remain in compliance. This means all future OpenAI models, including Astra, will launch with invisible watermarks.

Anthropic says it will watermark text generated by its AI models
Anthropic announced it will watermark text generated by its AI models, including Claude, to comply with the EU AI Act's transparency obligations. The watermark is applied at the model level, persists through copy-paste, and uses C2PA for files.
OpenAI will watermark ChatGPT outputs by default—but only in the EU
OpenAI will enable automatic watermarking of ChatGPT-generated text by default in the EU to comply with the EU AI Act, while keeping the feature optional in other regions.
