Harvard graduate, not a PhD, rarely on stage, rarely interviewed, seldom in the spotlight. His first job was at GiveWell, a nonprofit researching the effectiveness of charitable donations. It was there that he first seriously encountered AI safety. Later he went to Vicarious, a company that early on aimed to build AGI through robotics and vision systems. Then he joined OpenAI, on the safety team. He did something that few truly understood at the time: developed early Code models. That is, getting large models to understand and generate code. Nick later mentioned that this made him deeply uneasy. If you believe AI will move toward recursive self-improvement, a model that can write code is the first step on that path. The model starts writing code, and that code is used to train the next generation of models. At some point he saw that future: models iterating on themselves and then going out of control. So at the end of 2020, Nick, along with Dario, Daniela Amodei, and 11 others, defected from OpenAI to found Anthropic. Today, he leads Anthropic's pretraining team, responsible for training every version of Claude. He manages over 40 engineers and has over 27,000 academic citations. Now, Karpathy has joined his team.
