Keep multi-agent prototypes understandable as orchestration, runtimes, models, and tools multiply.
AutoGen is a framework for builders creating multi-agent AI applications that act autonomously or alongside humans.
It helps you prototype agent teams through layered AgentChat, Core, and Extensions APIs.
Key features: • AgentChat API – supports two-agent conversations, group chats, and other common patterns. • Core API – provides message passing, event-driven agents, and local or distributed runtimes. • Extensions API – adds LLM client implementations and capabilities such as code execution. • Python and .NET – offers packages, tutorials, and API references for both. • Studio and Bench – provides a no-code prototyping GUI and an agent-performance benchmarking suite.
Important: AutoGen is in maintenance mode with no new features planned. Microsoft recommends Microsoft Agent Framework for new users and provides an existing-user migration guide.
It’s open-source: code uses the MIT license; documentation and other content use CC BY 4.0.
