Summary

Figma launches Figma Specs, which lets you write requirements and design specs in Markdown directly on the design canvas and link components, design files, and code so AI Agents can read this context. It also upgrades MCP to make it easier for AI coding tools like Codex to integrate with Figma, and pairs with Code Layers to run interactive code and prototypes in the canvas.

AI doing UI's biggest headache — Figma is finally starting to fix it. Nowadays it's not hard to get AI to generate a beautiful interface. What's hard is getting it to follow instructions. Even when there are existing components and design specs available, it still likes to freelance — and as it keeps making changes, the whole page's style and business logic drift away. 😂 Figma has launched Figma Specs this time, which lets you write requirements and design specs in Markdown directly on the design canvas, link them to components, design files, and code, and let AI Agents read all that context too. It has also upgraded MCP to make it easier for AI coding tools like Codex to plug into Figma. Combined with Code Layers, you can even run interactive code and build prototypes right in the canvas. I think this direction is pretty right. AI generates code faster and faster these days, but repeatedly explaining requirements, correcting designs, and unifying components still takes a lot of time. Going forward, competition in AI-driven UI work may not just be about who generates fastest — it'll also come down to who can truly understand requirements, follow the specs, and minimize rework for humans.

The most frustrating thing about AI doing UI — Figma is finally starting to address it.

Generating a pretty interface with AI isn’t hard anymore. Getting it to actually follow your instructions is. Even with existing components and design guidelines in place, it still likes to freelance — and before you know it, the entire page’s style and business logic have drifted. 😂

Figma has now introduced Figma Specs, which lets you write requirements and design guidelines in Markdown directly on the design canvas, linked to components, design files, and code — so AI agents can read all that context too.

They’ve also upgraded MCP, making it easier for AI coding tools like Codex to plug into Figma. Combined with Code Layers, you can run interactive code and build prototypes right on the canvas.

I think this is the right direction. AI-generated code keeps getting faster, but repeatedly explaining requirements, fixing designs, and unifying components still eats up a lot of time.

Going forward, competition in AI-driven UI won’t just be about who generates fastest — it’ll also come down to who truly understands requirements, respects guidelines, and spares people from endless rework.
