A classic MIT open course that went viral has nothing to do with AI, algorithms, or physics.
It’s called How to Speak.
Professor Patrick Winston taught this course every January at MIT without fail for 40 years, until his death in 2019.
Generations of MIT’s genius students, before starting any project or launching any startup, were told by their seniors: “Go watch this course first.”
Right from the start, the professor laid out a blunt, even harsh, provocative claim:
“Your success in life depends largely on three things: your ability to speak, your ability to write, and finally, the quality of your ideas.”
In the most hardcore tech殿堂 MIT, speaking was ranked ahead of ideas.
For many people with a “technical mindset,” that conclusion was a wake-up call.
We always think: as long as my technical skills are strong enough and my ideas are brilliant enough, others will buy in.
But reality is brutally different.
If you have a world-changing idea in your head but can’t explain it clearly, in the eyes of others, you might as well have no idea at all.
So how do you get people to listen, understand, and remember your ideas?
The core logic of this course can be distilled into a few extremely practical communication rules:
First, never start with a joke.
Many people think telling a joke before presenting slides warms up the audience.
Professor says: wrong.
The audience has just sat down; their brains aren’t tuned into your channel yet. If you tell a joke then, they probably won’t react in time, and the room will just be awkward.
The golden opening moment should be used to make a “promise” — tell them exactly what they’ll take away from the next 60 minutes.
Second, control information density.
Don’t cram your slides with dense text. That’s like forcing people to do reading comprehension on the spot.
The human brain can only process one core focus at a time.
The more words on a page, the more your audience’s attention drifts away from you.
Third, paint pictures in their minds.
If you’re explaining a complex concept, don’t jump straight into formulas or jargon.
Try using the most concrete, vivid analogy that instantly creates a mental image, drawing the audience into the scenario.
The communication system this professor spent 40 years perfecting is still a secret weapon for many elites today.
In fact, some people now feed these rules directly into AI prompt templates, using Winston’s rigorous standards as their coach before every interview, pitch, or presentation.
In an era drowning in information garbage, the scarcest resource is no longer “ideas” — it’s “attention.”
Learning to speak well isn’t about pandering to others. It’s about giving that precious seed in your mind a bulletproof vest to land in the real world.
