Summary

Note that Hermes Agent's web search defaults to the Nous Portal free tier (500 requests/month). Alternatives: DDGS (free, unlimited), SearXNG (self-hosted), Tavily/Exa (1000/month with full page reading), Brave (2000/month). Recommended combo: search with DDGS, read pages with Tavily, configure via ~/.hermes/config.yaml.

With Hermes Agent’s attention: the web search defaults to Nous Portal, where the free tier only allows 500 searches per month, which can be easily exhausted. You can switch to:

· DDGS (DuckDuckGo): completely free, unlimited, no API key required
· SearXNG: self-hosted, unlimited and private
· Tavily / Exa: 1000 free requests per month, can read full page content directly
· Brave: 2000 free requests per month

But DDGS / SearXNG / Brave can only search, not read web pages. To fetch full text, you still need to rely on Tavily or Exa.

My combination: search via DDGS, only use Tavily quota when reading full pages — neither side gets overused.

Just modify web.backend in ~/.hermes/config.yaml.
