Age of the bespoke engines?

Summary

作者讨论了LLM推理引擎生态日益碎片化的现象,从早期依赖llama.cpp转向各种fork项目(如Niffler、Strata、Avalon、Basalt等),并质疑llama.cpp为何在性能上落后于许多独立开发者的作品。

When I started, and for some time, llama.cpp was the answer. Now, it seems like llama.cpp is the new ollama. It's slow and out of date and just behind. There was Ninfee for those for whom that applied. Then strata came out... And that was an unimaginable upgrade. How is llama so far behind? Now every day someone has their own forked engine that claims even better numbers. I already maxed out my token budget on Claude for the week and have my GPUs all running benchmarks so I'm waiting a few days, but I'll be trying Avalon to see if that lives up to the hype for my machine. Then there's basalt. There's beatleguese? It's kind of a mess. Innovation is great but it's better when the effort all goes in one direction and isn't spread into a thousand fractures of one-off projects. And yes, my critique of llama.cpp is a bit overstated. I still use it for e.g. 27b runs. But... I've now verified that flash next is both better and faster than 27b so I'm struggling to find a reason to use it. :/ Why are all these solo devs pulling something off for weeks that llama can't figure out?

Qwen3.8FN vLLM vs. llama.cpp vs Ninfer6000

Reddit r/LocalLLaMA

A community member benchmarks Ninfer6000 (a Ninfer fork tuned for RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell and Qwen3.8-Flash-Next) against vLLM and llama.cpp, finding ~1.6x decode speedup over vLLM and 2.2x over llama.cpp with near-identical accuracy, but reports crippling real-world tool-calling malformations that keep them on vLLM.

Inference Engines for LLMs & Local AI Hardware (2026 Edition)

X AI KOLs

This article provides a comprehensive guide to LLM inference engines for local AI hardware in 2026, explaining how to choose based on hardware strategy, workload, and serving model, and covering engines like llama.cpp, MLX, ExLlamaV2/3, vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM, and NVIDIA Dynamo.

@NFTCPS: Attention to those running large models locally! Someone has transformed llama.cpp into a performance beast — BeeLlama.cpp. With the same VRAM, inference speed triples and context capacity expands 7.5x. This isn't a slide deck; it's real benchmark data. It stuffs three top-tier optimizations into one codebase: DFlash speculative decoding…

X AI KOLs Timeline

BeeLlama.cpp is a fork of llama.cpp that integrates DFlash speculative decoding, TurboQuant/TCQ KV-cache compression, and adaptive draft control, achieving up to 3x faster inference and 7.5x context expansion on the same hardware.

Why AnythingLLM is moving from Ollama to Lemonade and llama.cpp

Reddit r/LocalLLaMA

AnythingLLM Desktop is replacing its bundled Ollama engine with AMD's open-source Lemonade server running llama.cpp, aiming for faster updates, direct GGUF downloads from Hugging Face, and broader hardware support including Vulkan, CUDA, Metal, and NPU acceleration.
