Summary
Orthogonal launched a service that helps always-on AI agents avoid wasting paid tool calls by checking usage after ambiguous timeouts or truncated responses before retrying, letting agents autonomously find, use, and pay for data services from many companies. The launch was highlighted alongside OpenAI's Dots integration for autonomous lead-generation pipelines.

Everyone shipped an always-on agent this month.
And agents retry by reflex. Timeout, retry. Truncated response, retry.
That habit gets expensive the moment every tool call has a price.
Orthogonal just launched and it solves that problem.
After an ambiguous timeout or a cut-off response, don’t repeat the paid call. Check usage first, and retry only once you know the earlier call didn’t complete.
It lets an AI agent find, use and pay for data services from dozens of other companies without a person setting up an account with each one.

A 30-day deep dive into the AI agent ecosystem reveals that most so-called startups are just prompt chains or API wrappers, while open-source tools enable solo developers to rival venture-backed companies. The next winners will focus on memory, reliability, and execution, leading to the rise of autonomous workflows and 'AI employees' within 18 months.
Your agent's retry logic dies when the agent does
The author shares lessons from putting an AI agent with write access into production, explaining that retry logic inside the agent loop fails when the process dies. They advocate for treating side-effectful tool calls as durable background jobs with idempotency keys.
