Is AI doing the same thing to white-collar jobs that industrialization did to farming?

Reddit r/ArtificialInteligence News

Summary

The article compares AI's potential impact on white-collar jobs to industrialization's effect on farming, arguing that just as farm automation drastically reduced agricultural labor demand, AI will similarly shrink computer-based white-collar work.

Let's take US for example. 100 years ago, half of the population worked on either farms or in agriculture-related jobs. Now its less than 5 percent. Main reason is automation in farms across US. Machines and new chemical fertilizers made farms so efficient that the need for human labor dropped. A field that required 100 workers to maintain and harvest now only needs 2 or 3 people using advanced machinery. How can we say AI is not doing the same to white-collar work, mostly jobs that are done on a computer? There are still farmers, and other people still make a living from agriculture but the number has decreased a lot.
