95% of new Chinese vertical dramas released in Q1 2026 were AI generated\. so who were the winners and losers?

Microdramas pioneered by Chinese content companies, blending the plots of soap opera TV with the monetization of pay\-to\-play mobile games have created a forecasted $12B juggernaut[1](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-1)in China\. In 2026, over 95% of roughly 128,000 new microdramas in Q1 2026 were AI generated sparking concern of mass job loss and giving us a case study on the impact of AI in media\.[2](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-2)

A common narrative is that AI will make humans obsolete\. In media I've always been skeptical of this take since I've assumed that people would always want to watch and be entertained by other people\. There will always be some place for human made content in entertainment\. We can see this play out with the smaller pool of live action shows pulling about 4\.8x the plays per title compared to AI and animated shows on Douyin in H1 2026\.[4](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-4)[5](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-5)
But quantity has a quality all its own as new AI and animated shows have captured a meaningful majority of combined new\-release plays on Douyin in H1 2026 \(69%\)\.[4](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-4)[5](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-5)

It's tempting to extrapolate this to the rest of media\. We should expect a growing share of all content to be AI generated but it's important to emphasize that even in microdramas we can see pricier live action formats outperform on average\. If this is a feature of audience habits, AI may accelerate a split between a cadre of smaller higher end human crafted content that out performs more synthetic or mass produced shows on average\. The question is if live action, or hybrid content remains the premium offering\.
Stepping back, this dynamic could play out both within as well as between formats \(Think a smaller % of TV made with AI vs Microdramas\)
In 2026, over 95% of roughly 128,000 new microdramas in Q1 2026 were AI generated sparking concern of mass job loss and giving us a case study on the impact of AI in media\.[2](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-2)The displacement of workers has, despite my best efforts been difficult to research and quantify\. Chinese financial disclosures show rising headcount at Duiba and varying employee\-cost trends across companies, but they do not establish a sector\-wide employment pattern\.

Source: Duiba interim results[6](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-6)· Kunlun Tech half\-year report[7](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-7)· COL half\-year report[8](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-8)\.
While AI generated content can be produced with less labor, AI shows still need artists, editors, producers and the like to make\. Given the sheer scale of production this could offset losses and grow the pie large enough that it creates more opportunities than it destroys\. Microdrama revenue is forecast to grow[1](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-1), while DataEye reports a growing audience[4](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-4)so I would wait before making a definitive call\.
For example, DataEye estimates more than 500,000 workers and individual creators[4](https://megaton.ai/news/what-happens-when-ai-makes-almost-all-the-shows#user-content-fn-source-4)are involved in AI and animated dramas in China but what percentage are making a living is less clear\. It does however reinforce that new opportunities are emerging\. Who benefits from these opportunities though is still an open question\. I assume individual crews will get smaller, number of crews will get larger, and high cost locations and vendors may become less economically viable \(Example: US crews that service Chinese microdramas\)\.
Factoring in audience taste, growing tech capabilities and regulations it's likely the direction & pace of opportunities to remain fluid in 2026 and beyond\.
