Agenetic economy is taking over.
GitHub recorded 7.38 B commits in Sept-2026, more than 5 times the figure a year earlier.
And up to now this year, GitHub has added 4M CPU cores, 160PB of high-speed storage and 50Tb/s of network capacity to absorb a flood of agent-written code.
That curve already outran GitHub’s hardware once, when a traffic surge knocked out authentication, Actions, pull requests and Copilot for 7 hours and 47 minutes on 17 August.
GitHub is now moving to a multi-region Azure deployment, due to finish early next year, and rebuilding Git to decouple storage from compute.
Satya Nadella (@satyanadella): We’re redefining the SDLC for the agentic era.
Lots of GitHub updates this morning at Universe:
• GitHub Copilot Fusion delivers frontier-level quality, 40% faster and at up to 77% lower cost
• Our unified Copilot harness is now in Foundry, a managed service for building

GitHub COO Kyle Daigle discusses the surge in AI agent-created pull requests (17 million in March) and the projected 14 billion commits this year, emphasizing open-source maintainer control, usage-based pricing over per-seat licensing, and the collapsing developer/non-developer distinction as AI tools enable non-developers to build apps.
GitHub Octoverse 2026
GitHub's Octoverse 2026 report, announced by EVP Jay Parikh at GitHub Universe, reveals a stark surge in developer activity driven by agentic engineering: merged PRs tripled to 220 million per month, commits more than tripled to 7.38 billion, and new repository creation doubled to 30.3 million per month.
@FinanceYF5: In the AI Era, GitHub Isn't Enough — What Does a Successor Look Like? GitHub's own numbers: monthly pushes grew 4.9x in a year (690M → 3.35B), PR merges nearly 4x. GitHub faces infrastructure bottlenecks in the AI era: monthly pushes grew 4.9x in a year, and the 5-server sync architecture per repository has become the bottleneck. The article analyzes GitHub's rebuild plans, moves by new players (Entire, Cursor, etc.), and argues that the real revolution isn't replacing GitHub as a platform, but AI code review replacing human line-by-line review.

GitHub reports that Git activity more than doubled year over year to 473.3B events per month and is rebuilding its Git infrastructure to support agentic, agent-scale software development. The post details architectural challenges such as commit latency bottlenecks, surging write throughput, ref contention, and read fan-out from CI and code scanning.
