China’s Zhipu AI \([Z\.ai](http://z.ai/)\) released its open\-weight GLM\-5\.2, and some researchers have claimed that it[matches Mythos](https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/chinese-ai-anthropic-mythos-cybersecurity-574b02c2?st=FRKgap&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink)in certain bug\-finding and cybersecurity scenarios\. While GLM lags behind models from[Anthropic](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/957845/openai-gpt-5-6-trump-administration-ai-preview)and OpenAI in other, more general tasks, it seems that China has dramatically reduced the gap in the capabilities between its models and those of the US\.
This level of advancement is particularly concerning to the US government, which has worked to restrict China’s access to powerful models like Anthropic’s[Mythos](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/958458/anthropic-mythos-5-is-back-trump-negotiations)and Fable, as well as the hardware necessary to train and run them\. The Trump administration views Mythos and other advanced AI models capable of identifying vulnerabilities as serious national security threats\. Recently, OpenAI unveiled[GPT\-5\.6](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/957845/openai-gpt-5-6-trump-administration-ai-preview), which has also raised concerns about its potential for misuse and has limited access to it\.
Because GLM is an open\-weight model, it can be[downloaded and run by anyone](https://www.ibtimes.com/chinese-open-weight-ai-model-raises-cybersecurity-worries-over-advanced-capabilities-3804610)on readily available hardware\. That gives it great flexibility and allows power users deep access, but it also makes it ripe for abuse by bad actors who can run it with little oversight\.

The White House suspects a China-linked group accessed Anthropic's powerful Mythos AI model, contributing to export restrictions; Anthropic denies China was discussed during export control talks.
The author tests whether other AI models can match Mythos's exceptional ability to find security vulnerabilities, creating a benchmark of bugs found by Mythos and testing models like Opus. Initial results suggest Mythos may be uniquely powerful.
Asian AI startups 360 and Sakana AI have launched powerful AI models (Tulongfeng and Fugu) that rival Anthropic's Mythos and Fable 5 amid a U.S. export ban on those models, highlighting growing competition and geopolitical tensions in AI.
According to a WSJ report, Zhipu AI's GLM-5.2 can match top US models in vulnerability discovery scenarios; 360 Security's new tool Tulongfeng is also comparable to Anthropic's Mythos.
