TL;DR: Airbnb’s stock surged 15% on a strong AI-driven growth quarter. CEO Brian Chesky said the company is transforming into an AI-native company, with AI driving more bookings, lower customer support costs, and higher revenue per employee.

Overview: Airbnb turns in its strongest growth quarter in years

Airbnb’s stock jumped 15% after its latest earnings report, as the company delivered one of its strongest growth quarters in years — with artificial intelligence as a key driver. Investors had been frustrated with Airbnb’s slowing growth, but this quarter’s results reversed that sentiment.

On Tech Check, reporter MacKenzie Sigalos covered the news. She noted that this marks a major shift for Airbnb.

Turning point: The January strategic reset

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said January was a pivotal turning point for the company. That’s when he brought in Meta’s former head of generative AI as Airbnb’s CTO and launched a company-wide strategic reset.

Chesky said in an exclusive interview:

“I think it’s safe to say now that AI is the best thing that’s ever happened to Airbnb. We’re becoming an AI-native company, and that’s probably the leading explanation for our performance.”

What AI has delivered

Chesky said AI is helping Airbnb across multiple dimensions:

  • Attracting more bookings
  • Dramatically cutting customer support costs
  • Significantly boosting team productivity

These gains first showed up in engineering, and have since expanded into product and marketing.

Measuring it: Token usage vs. revenue per employee

Airbnb tracks employees’ AI token usage, but Chesky called that a fairly crude metric. He believes revenue per employee is a better measure — and that number is going up.

Chesky also noted that Airbnb’s headcount has remained flat year-to-date. He said investors can expect revenue growth to far outpace headcount growth for the foreseeable future.

The logic behind spending more: Inference costs are trivial next to booking value

It’s this economic effect that makes Chesky willing to invest more heavily in AI. His view: consumer-facing AI is hard to monetize, but in Airbnb’s case, AI inference costs are trivial relative to the value of a single booking.

Chesky said:

“We’re going to spend significantly more on AI tokens this year than expected, but that’s fine, because the ROI is there, and…”
