TL;DR: The Odin programming language will release its first official version (Odin 2027) in January 2027, preceded by milestones such as a complete language specification, inline assembly, new standard library packages, and platform support.
## A Decade in Review: From Passion Project to Production-Grade Language
I’m Ginger Bill. On this very day in 2016, I committed the first line of code for the Odin programming language. It all started with a drunken impulse born out of frustration with C++. The past ten years have been a rollercoaster—from a weekend hobby project to working at Janga Effects, a company building commercial software entirely in Odin, and now many companies use Odin as their primary programming language. Games built with Odin are on Steam, and millions of people have tried Odin. Thank you to everyone who uses Odin and enjoys programming.
## The Road to 1.0
Odin is approaching its 1.0 release, but several key steps remain.
### Complete Language Specification
**The first step is to write a complete specification that the compiler strictly follows.** This spec is non-negotiable for 1.0.
### Inline Assembly
To meet low-level needs, Odin finally gains inline assembly. This feature is useful when you need precise control over machine code generation without leaving Odin’s comfort zone.
### New Standard Library Packages
We are developing a set of excellent new packages. Any core library for a 1.0 release must work out of the box:
- **HTTP package**: For serving and consuming web content.
- **TLS 1.2 native support**: Will arrive after the main release.
- **Full native bindings for the Objective-C core libraries**: Targeting Apple users and developers, minimizing dependency on Apple-specific languages.
- **iOS and Android support**: Full mobile coverage.
- **Image package**: Improving image processing in the core library.
- **Zip package**: Supporting reading and writing archive files.
## Version Name: Odin 2027
We don’t think the traditional “1.0” naming is ideal, so we’ve decided to call Odin’s first release **Odin 2027**. This date-based version scheme allows us to release updates more regularly while keeping nightly and monthly builds. You can tell at a glance how recent a version is.
**Planned Timeline:**
- Release Candidate: Before Christmas 2026
- Official Release: January 2027
Until then, everything is about stability—no major last-minute features. The focus is on hardening the core libraries, adhering to the spec, and ensuring every part of the roadmap is rock-solid.
## Community Involvement
Now is the time to get involved. Monthly and nightly builds are already available today. Go use Odin, put the new packages through their paces, report bugs, and tell us what feels off. Every report between now and Christmas 2026 will make that release better.
## Acknowledgements
Ten years of work, and we’re finally nearing the finish line. Thank you to everyone who has used, contributed to, and believed in Odin. None of this would have been possible without you. Oh, and the entire video was edited in **Black**—a fledgling video editor written entirely in Odin. Here’s to the next decade and the joy of programming. Cheers!
I’m Bill, GingerBill. See you in 2027.
