Someone created a GitHub repo that redirects Claude Code traffic to over a dozen free models like DeepSeek and Kimi. It takes 5 minutes to set up, and more than 20,000 developers are already using it. It sounds like a freeloader’s dream, but what’s really worth looking at isn’t the “permanently free” tag — it’s the fact that the core value of tools like Claude Code is being cracked open:
Front-end interaction, code workflows, agent execution frameworks, underlying model providers, API routing layers, cost control — every layer can be swapped out.
Going forward, developers won’t just ask “which model is the strongest.” They’ll ask “can I route this same workflow to a cheaper, faster, or better-suited model for the task at hand?” That’s the real direction this repo points to. Have you tried any routing solutions like this?
