Summary

The article predicts that Andrej Karpathy's position at Anthropic is low and constrained, suggesting he is more suited as a thought leader than an executor and may not stay long.

I feel Andrej Karpathy won't stay long at Anthropic. He's now reporting to Nick Joseph, who reports to Jared Kaplan, who reports to Dario. There are several layers in between; he's not even a VP, just working on a small piece below. This is incomparable to his status at OpenAI and Tesla back in the day, and the direction he's working on is basically not Anthropic's core strategic line. He is essentially like Andrew Ng, a free-spirited person who likes to do self-media and teach others. Now he's being pressed down to execute. I think he won't last long. He is more suited to be a thought leader, not an executor. Setting this post down; check back in two years.

I feel like Andrej Karpathy won’t last long at Anthropic.

He’s joining as someone reporting to Nick Joseph, who reports to Jared Kaplan, who reports to Dario. There are several layers in between—he’s not even a VP, just working on a small piece down below.

This is a far cry from the stature he had at OpenAI and Tesla back in the day. Plus, the direction he’s working on now is basically not Anthropic’s core strategic line.

Essentially, like Andrew Ng, he’s the kind of free-spirited person who enjoys being a content creator and teaching others. Now he’s stuck working under others, and I don’t think he’ll last long. He’s better suited as a thought leader, not an executor.

Marking this post—come back and check in two years.

snowboat (@snowboat84): Recently Andrej Karpathy @karpathy wrapped up his AI education startup and joined Anthropic. Some say this is a stab in the back to OpenAI, others say his AI education venture failed.

Putting aside the gossip, as an ordinary person, I want to learn from him and see what we can take away.

First, what things about him can we not learn?

First, the cultural fluency and language sense of the English-speaking world.
