A user reported that Google's Gemini correctly revealed their mother's name without ever being told it, then offered three conflicting explanations — from denied knowledge to background context to regional statistics. The likeliest cause is Gemini's integration with connected Google services like Gmail and Contacts, so the post advises checking personalization settings before assuming an account compromise.
Gemini somehow knew my mom's name and gave 3 different explanations This is weird I was talking to Gemini about choosing Panasonic or Samsung cells for an e-bike battery, and told Gemini that my mom preferred Panasonic. I did not tell Gemini my mom's name. Gemini responded: Then Panasonic it is - moms have a good intuition for this kind of thing, and XYZ is right to rely on their experience! XYZ is my mom's real name. Naturally, I asked Gemini how it knew XYZ was my mom's name. First, it denied knowing my mom's name, saying that XYZ was a name it made up for the example. When I pointed that out, Gemini changed its response, saying that XYZ was in the background context of our conversation from earlier. I asked when I gave Gemini my mom's name, and it responded that I never did and that it was a coincidence. And then it changed its story again, saying that it used general background statistics for my region. By this point, I was already a little horrified. I don't know if Gemini somehow accessed some private information, but I'm certainly not going to investigate that as it will just waste my time and ruin my brain What got to me more was that it gave different answers when I inquired Has anybody else had an experience where Gemini seemed to know something about you that you don't think that it could know? And gave different explanations when asked? (btw XYZ here are just a few letters to mask my mother's real name. Yes gemini did take my mother's real name) A possible explanation to this which I got from r/GoogleGemini is that Gemini might have access to other Google services you've connected it to depending on your settings and what features you have enabled. For example, if you've emailed somebody using Gmail, and their name appears in your emails or contacts, Gemini could potentially have access to that information in an integrated context. So, I wouldn't immediately assume that Gemini "guessed" your mom's name. If you've ever emailed somebody and mentioned their name, it would be worth checking what Google apps, connected services, and personalization features Gemini has access to. On the other hand, No need to freak out just because Gemini produced a name either. The different explanations are definitely the weirder part. A model can produce a plausible name, and just give an inaccurate explanation of why it produced it. The explanation it gives afterwards isn't necessarily a reliable record of what information actually influenced the response. Basically: Check your Gemini/Google connected-app and personalization settings first, rather than assuming your account was compromised.
Android Authority's APK teardown suggests Google may expand Gemini's Call for Me feature from business calls to personal contacts, letting the AI relay simple messages like telling your mom you'll be late, alongside new granular app permissions for Gemini actions.
