China has a solution to every problem.
I needed to read signs, menus, and pharmacy labels.
This free AI app from OpenBMB runs entirely on my iPhone and does exactly that, in seconds, offline, in any language.

Three taps from phone to AI:
- Install MiniCPM-V via TestFlight (link in the last tweet)
- Open the app
- Point the camera at anything
Total time: under 60 seconds. Works on a plane, in a tunnel, anywhere with no signal.
In China this week, three real tests:
→ Pharmacy package: full ingredient and dosage breakdown in English → Restaurant menu: every dish translated with cuisine notes → Metro sign: line, transfer, and exit in seconds
All offline, all in seconds. The model is MiniCPM-V 4.6 from OpenBMB, a 1.3 billion parameter vision AI (small by AI standards) that runs entirely on your phone. It reads dozens of languages, watches short video clips, and answers questions about anything you point a camera at.
Where it’ll stumble: long-form reasoning, rare handwriting, and very long documents. For everything a traveler actually needs, it’s a translator that never goes down.
Install it before your next trip:

Free, open source, runs entirely on your phone
This is the part most people miss.
A year ago AI felt like a threat. Now it’s the cheapest Plan B anyone can build.
The people moving fastest aren’t engineers. They’re the ones who never assumed AI was for them, opened something like Accio Work, and figured it out.
