[Anthropic](https://vectorwire.ai/models/vendors/anthropic)on October 21 launched Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent that competes directly with Meta's MUSE and[OpenAI](https://vectorwire.ai/models/vendors/openai)'s Dots[6](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-6),[7](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-7),[8](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-8)\. The agent is available as a research preview, accessible via waitlist to US\-based Pro and Max subscribers[1](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-1)\. Competing products have already gained traction:[Meta](https://vectorwire.ai/models/vendors/meta)CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts that more than 10 million people in the US and Canada have set up MUSE personal agents over the past month and a half[5](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-5)\.
## How Duet works
Claude Duet ships as a standalone app on iOS and Android and through Claude on the web[10](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-10)\. It runs on[Claude Opus 5\.5](https://vectorwire.ai/models/claude-opus-5-5)and operates on its own virtual machine with a dedicated browser, allowing it to complete tasks in the background without requiring an active Claude session\.
Each morning the agent generates a short briefing drawn from a user's connected apps, surfacing items that need attention\. Throughout the day it monitors those apps and messages the user only when something requires action[9](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-9)\. Anthropic says users can hand Duet tasks ranging from scheduling meetings to building dashboards, creating financial or sales forecasts, prototyping, and constructing web apps\.
With plug\-ins and connectors, Anthropic says Duet can find Gmail and Slack messages a user missed and prepare draft replies, draft and post job listings on LinkedIn, prepare and run payroll in Gusto, set up a Shopify store, and purchase items using Stripe's Link[2](https://vectorwire.ai/article/anthropic-enters-proactive-agent-race-with-claude-duet-ccb35f#source-2)\. The agent works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins\.
The agent inherits memory, skills, and app connections already stored in a user's Claude account, so setup is minimal\. All interactions happen in a single ongoing thread rather than across separate conversations\.
## Safety rails and limitations
A guardrail requires user approval before the agent takes consequential actions such as sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting a file\. Anthropic says it built a new classifier and a system prompt to check messages and prevent leaks of sensitive information\. The system rejects requests to share the strictest tier of information, including credit card numbers and government identification\. Other sensitive data such as health or personal finances passes through only when the user has explicitly instructed Duet to send it\.
Anthropic said Claude Duet is still in an early phase and might misread a thread or miscalibrate what is urgent\. The company also said Duet is primarily designed for the workplace and that personal errands like booking tickets are not as strong a use case\.
Anthropic says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners who have more to track than they can manage on their own\. The launch follows OpenAI's release of Dots by several weeks and arrives amid a surge in popularity for MUSE, which rocketed to the top of Apple's App Store after launching last month\.ANALYSISBy matching the core feature set of both rivals, including background execution on a virtual machine, morning briefings, and app\-connector breadth, Anthropic is positioning Claude Duet as a direct substitute rather than a differentiated alternative\. Its workplace\-first framing and acknowledged limitations on personal errands mark the clearest distinction from MUSE's broader consumer pitch\.
No timeline for broader availability beyond the waitlist was disclosed in the announcement\.
