# How ChatGPT adoption has expanded Source: [https://openai.com/index/how-chatgpt-adoption-has-expanded/](https://openai.com/index/how-chatgpt-adoption-has-expanded/) ChatGPT adoption is widening and deepening around the world\. New OpenAI Signals data shows that people use ChatGPT more often and for a broader range of tasks over time, while its user base is becoming more global and more diverse\. Using aggregated data, OpenAI Signals measures how people interact with Individual ChatGPT plans \(these include Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans\) over time\. This analysis offers a view into how Individual AI usage is evolving as ChatGPT reaches global scale\. The visualizations below highlight several core trends in global AI adoption: how use of ChatGPT deepened since launch, the ways people incorporate ChatGPT into their routines, and how this varies across languages and regions\. Together, these findings provide a clearer picture of how people around the world are incorporating ChatGPT into work, learning, and daily life—in other words how AI is benefiting a large swath of humanity\. ## ChatGPT users deepened and expanded their use over time As individuals use ChatGPT for longer, they both send more messages daily and try more new capabilities\. Over time, users both did more things and did things more on ChatGPT\. Six months after signing up, users sent 50% more messages per day than they did when they signed up\. They also doubled the number of distinct tasks they’ve tried on ChatGPT\. Data is based on a 0\.1% sample of users whose accounts were created between 2025\-10\-15 and 2026\-05\-01, and includes information on activity through 2026\-05\-31\. Depth measures the number of messages the user has sent in the previous 28 days relative to the number they sent in the 28 days after account creation\. Breadth measures the number of cumulative capabilities a user has used, relative to the number they used in the 28 days after account creation\. Capabilities are measured using a classifier, which categorizes messages into one of 53 categories\. Banned users, users under 18 years of age, and users who do not send any messages for 28 days after account creation are excluded\. ## ChatGPT adoption accelerated across regions ChatGPT adoption has grown sharply across every continent since July 2023\. In relative terms, the fastest growth has been in Africa and Asia\. Each series plots the change in the number of weekly active ChatGPT users in each region relative to the baseline rate for that region in July 2023\. Users are considered active if they have sent a message in the seven days before the start of each month\. Countries in which ChatGPT does not operate are excluded, as are users under 18 years of age\. A similar pattern appears across country\-development groupings: lower\-Human Development Index \(HDI\) countries have seen the fastest relative growth in weekly active users since July 2023\. OpenAI has continued to provide low\-cost access to ChatGPT through our free and Go plans\. Each series plots the change in the number of weekly active ChatGPT users by 2023 Human Development Index category, relative to the baseline rate of usage in each category in July 2023\. Users are considered active if they have sent a message in the seven days before the start of each month\. Countries in which ChatGPT does not operate are excluded, as are users under 18 years of age\. ## ChatGPT’s user base became more global and more diverse Usage by people with typically\-female names[has increased](https://openai.com/signals/data/), now representing most usage globally\. Brazil, Colombia, Poland, and Namibia rank among the countries where messages sent by users with typically feminine names most significantly exceed users with typically masculine names\. In contrast, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali have the most concentrated usage by those with typically masculine names\. Overall, this data shows our best estimate of how many people with typically feminine or masculine names are using ChatGPT since we do not collect information on users’ gender\.[1](https://openai.com/index/how-chatgpt-adoption-has-expanded/#citation-bottom-1) Data is based on name\-to\-gender crosswalks, and reflects users active in the seven days before the start of the month\. The analysis excludes users whose names are not typically masculine or typically feminine\. Countries are omitted when at least half of active users’ names cannot be classified\. Users under 18 years of age are excluded\. Non\-English ChatGPT usage grew alongside global usage\. Users predominantly using a language other than English now represent over half of active users\. The leading non\-English languages on ChatGPT are Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic\. Language is assigned using each user’s most recent available language classification profile\. Monthly shares include users active in the seven days preceding the first day of each month who are over 18 years of age\. Uzbek, Kazakh, and Burmese were the languages with the largest percentage increase in their share of active users since July 2023\. Limited to languages with at least 1 million users active in June 2026\. Each series is indexed to its July 2023 share\. Usage shares are calculated over the set of users active in the seven days preceding the first day of each month and who are over 18 years of age\. The primary language of each user is determined using the language used in the plurality of their messages\. ## Learn more OpenAI Signals is an ongoing effort to ensure that researchers and policymakers have the best data at their fingertips to understand how AI is affecting and will impact the economy\. - If you’re a researcher interested in leveraging ChatGPT usage data, download it for your own research and exploration[here](https://openai.com/signals/data-download/)\. - If you want to stay up\-to\-date on data releases, subscribe for updates[here](https://openai.com/signals/data-download/)\.
