Summary

Google is donating its Agent Substrate project to CNCF, marking a potential turning point in the standardization of agent infrastructure such as sandboxes, tool calling, and context lifecycle management across agentic systems.

Agent infrastructure has finally reached the critical point of standardization. Sandboxes, tool calling, context lifecycle—these used to be the grunt work that every company's harness had to cobble together on its own. Now there's a chance to solidify them into a public compute layer. I've always believed that all infrastructure is worth rewriting from scratch for Agents—this step today is a very solid one indeed.

Agent infrastructure has finally reached the tipping point toward standardization. Sandboxes, tool calling, context lifecycle — these were once the grunt work that every company’s harness had to stitch together on its own. Now there’s a real opportunity to consolidate them into a public compute layer. I’ve long believed that all agent infrastructure is worth rewriting from scratch — and this step today is a genuinely solid one.
