I honestly can't tell if open models are actually behind in a meaningful way or just behind for a few months at a time. A year or two ago it felt like there was a pretty clear divide. Everytime it feels like closed labs are starting to pull away, another open models drops. And a lot of the strongest open models lately are coming out of China, which makes the whole "Us has a huge AI lead" thing feel way less obvious than it use to. So if Chinese labs are already catching up this fast, I'm not sure why American data companies would be selling them specialized data or even allowed to. What actually keeps American frontier labs ahead long term?
