“My startup is shutting down, so I’m heading back to work”
Cali Baby has only been live for two months, and now it’s time to say goodbye to everyone due to the acquisition
The @zolplay I founded is also wrapping up and closing down
Next, I’ll be joining Momcozy to take charge of the platform and product
It feels a bit sudden, maybe
Truth is, the original reason I made this app was pretty simple: with the arrival of our second child at home, I had to start tracking things like feeding and sleeping all over again. I tried out a bunch of existing tools, but they always felt a little clunky somewhere along the way, so I figured I’d just build one myself
First, I whipped up a quick experimental PWA, then turned it into a proper iOS app, and later ported it to Android. I handled the design myself, wrote the code myself, used it deeply myself—product manager, designer, engineer, and user: all those roles were covered
From prototype to launch, it took several months of polishing back and forth. Later, other families started using it; some paid to support it, and others kept suggesting new features. A little tool that grew out of my own family’s daily routine slowly found its way into other homes like that
And yet, just two months after launch, here I am writing the shutdown notice. This pace of change is a little beyond what I imagined
And then there’s wrapping up Zolplay
Over these years, my team and I have built products for clients and our own products too. From branding and design to development, a lot of projects came together bit by bit just like that. Thanks to the partners I’ve worked with, and thanks to the clients who’ve entrusted us with their projects. Every project in this journey has been our labor of love
Now, I’m shifting from leading my own team to build products to joining a new team to handle platform and product
The parenting track Feels familiar yet unfamiliar
Familiar because I’ve always been tackling pain points for my wife and kids Unfamiliar because I’m not a mom myself, so there’s only so much I can do directly—I can only pour my all into helping through what I’m best at: product and development
As a dad to two kids, I first created Cali Baby out of real family needs, and next, I’ll be helping more families through Momcozy
Thanks to every friend who’s used Cali Baby, offered suggestions, or paid to support it
And thanks to everyone who’s followed Zolplay over the years and worked with us on things
This chapter with Zolplay and Cali Baby comes to a close for now
Looking back, it’s been five years of entrepreneurship in the blink of an eye—the biggest change is how AI is everywhere in life now, while the one constant is that passion and obsession I have for great products
These days, switching from boss to getting ready to clock in for a job is all because I want to join a like-minded team and do meaningful work together
Hoping the future gets even better~❤️
