A recent research finding offers a very interesting explanatory framework for “long COVID”:
SARS-CoV-2 infection
→ Severe disturbance of the immune system → Latent viruses previously suppressed by immune mechanisms such as T cells spiral out of control → EBV, CMV, HSV, etc. begin replicating again → Further inflammation, immune activation, and tissue damage → In some people, symptoms persist even after SARS-CoV-2 has been largely cleared.
SARS-CoV-2 “knocked over the first domino”—what causes problems down the line may not necessarily be SARS-CoV-2 itself.
This is likely a substantial piece of the long COVID puzzle; in particular, it may explain a subset of patients whose symptoms are primarily fatigue, PEM, and brain fog. But as things stand now, long COVID is more likely a multi-mechanism disease that emerges after SARS-CoV-2 disrupts the entire immune–virus ecosystem, rather than a simple case of EBV reactivation.
