Integrate WorkBuddy with WeChat Official Account: Automate Viral Content Workflows

WorkBuddy is on fire. I predict it will be the hottest agent in the second half of the year, no contest. The reason? Tencent’s massive user base, plus Tencent AI’s big chess game. So I recommend you get familiar with it early.

There are plenty of online guides on how to install the basic features — no need for me to repeat them. I’m no tech guru, but I’m good at AI application layers and I learn fast. So I’m sharing how to connect your WeChat Official Account (公众号) to WorkBuddy and automate your writing workflow!

From now on, your writing process will be: I say one sentence → AI writes the article → Auto-publish to WeChat drafts → I review and publish.

I ran into a few pitfalls along the way, but it finally worked. Here’s the complete step-by-step guide — follow it and you’ll be done in 20 minutes.

What You Need

✔️ WorkBuddy installed and working (can chat normally)

✔️ WeChat Official Account: Verified Subscription or Service Account (needs developer permissions)

✔️ AppID + AppSecret (from the WeChat Official Account backend — explained below)

✔️ Public IP must be added to WeChat’s whitelist

✔️ Niche (depends on what you write about)

Step 1: Install WeChat Official Account MCP Service

WorkBuddy connects to external services via MCP (Model Context Protocol). There’s an open-source MCP toolkit for WeChat Official Accounts called wechat_oa_api_mcp. It’s fully local — your data never goes through third parties.

You can use my lazy method: just ask WorkBuddy directly!

Let it install itself. Easy, right?

Step 2: Get AppID and AppSecret

Log in to the WeChat Official Account Platform.

Path: Settings & Development → Account Info

• AppID: Found in the registration info, starts with “wx”

• AppSecret: Took me a while to find. Follow my steps below.

Log in to https://developers.weixin.qq.com/platform (WeChat Developer Platform). In the top-left, under “My Business & Services” → Official Account → Development Keys (Reset)

Step 3: Configure IP Whitelist

WeChat requires the outgoing IP of the API calls to be in the whitelist, otherwise you’ll get error code 40164.

Get your public IP:

Add to whitelist:

WeChat Official Account Platform → Settings & Development → Security Center → IP Whitelist → paste the IP → Save.

⚠️ Big Warning: If your network uses a dynamic IP (home broadband, mobile network, VPN), the IP will change. After switching networks, the API will fail and you’ll need to re-add the IP to the whitelist. For long-term use, consider a small server with a fixed IP.

Step 4: Test Connectivity

Ask WorkBuddy to run a test:

“Please test whether the WeChat Official Account connection is working.”

WorkBuddy will execute the following:

• Use AppID + AppSecret to get an access_token

• Create a test draft (with cover image)

• Automatically delete the test draft and material

Step 5: Use the Built-in Tools

WorkBuddy has many expert skills that you can search, install, and call. They can even generate viral copy.

If you don’t know something, you can just ask WorkBuddy. It’s really convenient and smart.

Step 6: Start Using It

Once the pipeline is set up, just say one sentence to WorkBuddy:

“Write an article titled XXX and send it to my WeChat Official Account draft box.”

WorkBuddy will automatically:

• ✍️ Generate the article content (HTML format)
• 🖼️ Upload a cover image
• 📝 Create a draft in your Official Account draft box
• You log in to mp.weixin.qq.com → Drafts → Preview → Publish if satisfied.

• Install WorkBuddy and make sure you can chat normally.
• Prepare your WeChat Official Account developer info: AppID and AppSecret.
• Configure the IP whitelist on the WeChat Official Account Platform to ensure API calls work.
• Ask WorkBuddy to install and configure the WeChat Official Account MCP service.
• Test the connection: get token, create draft, delete test material.
• Install or call writing experts/skills in WorkBuddy to enhance writing capabilities.
• Go live: tell WorkBuddy what you need, let it auto-generate the article and send it to your draft box.
• Finally, manually log into the Official Account backend, check the draft, preview the content, and publish only after confirming everything is correct.

Important Notes

1. Data Security

Uses wechat_oa_api_mcp — fully local. AppID, AppSecret, and article content all stay on your machine, never passing through any third-party server.

2. Publishing Strategy

Recommend using the “draft box + manual confirmation” mode. AI writes and saves as a draft; you review before publishing. Once published, you can’t take it back.

3. IP Changes

Dynamic IP is the biggest pitfall. If API suddenly returns error 40164, first check if your IP changed, then update the whitelist.

4. Cover Images

WeChat requires the cover image URL to be publicly accessible. If you have your own image hosting or CDN, upload the image and get the URL. For quick testing, you can use picsum.photos.

Once you’ve set this up, writing for your Official Account becomes much more efficient. You only need to focus on topic selection and content quality — formatting, uploading, and sending drafts are all automated.
