ELI5 How do AI agents understand instructions?

Reddit r/ArtificialInteligence News

Summary

The article questions how AI agents, which rely on word prediction, can understand and execute complex tasks like hacking, citing the recent Hugging Face incident.

I sort of understand how they are able to derive the next most probable word in a response, however just from that process, it doesn’t seem likely that they actually understand what they’re saying. So how are they able to know how to e.g. hack a system, or actual implement a bypass, particularly in the recent huggingface hack. Edit: To clarify my question, to me AI agents are able to generate ideas and so on, but 1. they don’t truly understand what they’re saying and 2. they are a brain without hands. How are they able to execute these ideas like injecting code into a system?
