Abstract
Therapidconvergenceofartificialintelligence(AI)towardconversationalchatbotinterfacesmarksacriticalmomentfortheindustry.Thispaperarguesthatthechatbotparadigmisnotaneutralinterfacechoice,butadominantsociotechnicalconfigurationwhosewidespreadadoptionreshapessocial,economic,legal,andenvironmentalsystems.WeexaminehowtreatingAIprimarilyasconversationalassistantshasextensivestructuraldownsides.Weshowhowchatbot-basedsystemsoftenfailtoadequatelymeetuserneeds,particularlyincomplexorhigh-stakescontexts,whileprojectingconfidenceandauthority.Wefurtheranalyzehowthenormalizationofchatbot-mediatedinteractionalterspatternsofwork,learning,anddecision-making,contributingtodeskilling,homogenizationofknowledge,andshiftingexpectationsofexpertise.Finally,weexaminebroadersocietaleffects,includinglabordisplacement,concentrationofeconomicpower,andincreasedenvironmentalcostsdrivenbysustainedinvestmentinlarge-scalechatbotinfrastructures.Whileacknowledginglegitimatebenefits,wearguethatthecurrenttrajectoryofAIdevelopmentreflectsspecificvaluechoicesthatprioritizeconversationalgeneralityoverdomainspecificity,accountability,andlong-termsocialsustainability.WeconcludebyoutliningalternativedirectionsforAIdevelopmentandgovernancethatmovebeyondone-size-fits-allchatbots,emphasizingpluralisticsystemdesign,task-specifictools,andinstitutionalsafeguardstomitigatesocialandeconomicharm.
