Nothing cancels its 2026 CMF phone due to rising RAM prices, as co-founder Akis Evangelidis stated that they couldn't build a phone at a reasonable price. The RAM shortage is also affecting other companies like Apple.

Nothing’s next budget phone is the latest victim of RAMageddon\. As[*9to5Google*](https://9to5google.com/2026/06/19/nothing-cmf-phone-ram-costs/)reports, Nothing co\-founder Akis Evangelidis announced in[a post on X](https://x.com/AkisEvangelidis/status/2067855233968156975?s=20)that a follow\-up to the[CMF Phone 2 Pro](https://www.theverge.com/news/657064/nothing-cmf-phone-pro-2-launch-us-release-price-modules)won’t be coming this year:
> We were working on a successor but with memory prices where they are right now, we can’t build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF\. As a result, we’ve decided not to launch a new CMF phone this year\.
Last week,[Nothing CEO and co\-founder Carl Pei](https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/949403/nothing-carl-pei-ram-phone-prices)also said the[RAM shortage](https://www.theverge.com/news/839353/pc-ram-shortage-pricing-spike-news)has impacted the cost of the company’s mid\-range phone, stating, “For Phone 4A, memory costs doubled between when we decided to build the device and when it launched\. They’ve doubled again since\.” According to Pei, “memory is now the most expensive component in a smartphone\.” Nothing is far from the only company facing RAM pricing challenges — earlier this week, Tim Cook announced[Apple will be raising prices](https://www.theverge.com/tech/951948/apple-tim-cook-price-increases-ram), saying “the situation has become unsustainable\.”
While there won’t be a new CMF phone this year, Evangelidis added in his post that CMF still has “several new products launching as well as some entirely new categories\.” He also hinted that “the smartphone launch season at Nothing isn’t over yet\.”

A free daily digest of the news that matters most\.
Nothing CEO Carl Pei warns that phone prices will continue to rise due to escalating RAM costs, which now account for over 50% of hardware costs, and notes that typical sale discounts may be diminished.
AI-driven demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is constraining consumer RAM production, causing price increases for devices like cheap smartphones, especially in emerging markets.
Global RAM manufacturers are expected to meet only 60% of demand by end of 2027, with shortages potentially lasting until 2030, as chipmakers prioritize high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers over consumer electronics. Price increases are already affecting phones, laptops, VR headsets, and gaming devices.
An ex-Samsung chip executive predicts that aggressive investments by Chinese memory manufacturers like CXMT could lead to a RAM price drop in the second half of 2027, as increased supply outpaces demand.
