Anthropic didn’t extend Fable 5 to be nice. They extended it because of GPT 5.6.
Look at the pattern. Three deadlines in 18 days, and every single one got moved at the last minute. Companies don’t do that when things are going to plan.
Here’s the math they’re staring at. The day Fable leaves subscriptions, nobody is paying $10 per million input and $50 per million output for it. Everyone falls back to Opus 4.8. And Opus 4.8 against GPT 5.6 is the biggest gap these two companies have ever had.
They can’t afford that fight right now. So the free window keeps rolling.
My bet: Fable stays on subs until they have a cheaper Fable-class model ready to replace it. There’s already an unreleased Claude model that leaked inside Cursor this week.
Whoever wins this, we eat free for another week. I already know what I’m pointing Fable at. That’s in the first comment.
This was supposed to be attached there hahah my bad.
@PrajwalTomar_ yeah, I noticed that too. feels like they’re scrambling behind the scenes. wonder if they’re biting off more than they can chew with this rollout.
