In late March 2025, a top-tier pediatric hospital in Shanghai admitted a 6-year-old girl. A single base mutation in the CHD3 gene (a C, when it should have been a T) caused Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome, characterized by delays in language, cognition, and motor development, though the underlying condition was not directly life-threatening.
After contacting Qiu Zilong’s team, the family decided to develop a customized base editing therapy targeting the central nervous system for their daughter. The editor was delivered via an AAV viral vector through intrathecal injection into the cerebrospinal fluid.
The family raised approximately $860,000 (equivalent to 5.42 million RMB) from their own funds and with support from relatives and friends for the design and preparation of this individualized therapy. The hospital approved it under a certain in-hospital/pilot channel that exempted it from review by the National Medical Products Administration, and the ethics committee gave its consent.
