The author discusses saving for retirement despite believing it's irrational due to the expected impact of AGI on the economy and jobs within 20 years, suggesting money will become irrelevant post-AGI.
TL;DR: I think it's completely irrational to pay into my pension but I have zero plans to stop, it costs 5% of my salary for peace of mind. There are definitely better ways to use that money, giving it to charity right now could mean one more child sees the singularity. Whether AGI/ASI is aligned or not I see zero chance that 20 years from now we haven't cracked AGI. And I see zero chance of money mattering post AGI (except tbf in the imo very unlikely event it just pulls a "Her" and "leaves" in some way and salts the earth somehow that prevents new AGI without otherwise harming us), only thing that will matter is if AGI is aligned. Hell, even if we never get AGI, I think within 20 years and enough harnesses for the best public models today then society won't be able to sustain half the jobs it does now. Even if reasoning never gets better than astra or claude 5.5, even if Laya/Jev is the wall for quick decisions, I still expect some growth in "irl movement" brains, as in the submodules that can turn a reasoning model's atomic instructions into actual actions e.g. flip the burger -> "flips the burger" -> Oh my god. Maybe they won't replace plumbers, but 90% or the workers at Aldi and McDonald's with the right harness plus that inevitable increase in irl movement capability. I don't think there's a wall FWIW, I think AGI will come, and it will probably make ASI (it might instead judge that ASI as not worth the risk, if it can cure aging and all disease but a few years slower then it might just say "making ASI risks 8 billion humans dying if not worse, delaying the cure for aging whilst we already are outpacing aging with temporary incomplete "cures" is only costing a few thousand lives a year and we expect to be done within 10 years, ASI has high than 1 in 1000 odds of killing you all or worse and so the numbers make it clearly a bad idea" and refuse to make ASI) TL;DR: I think it's completely irrational to pay into my pension but I have zero plans to stop, it costs 5% of my salary for peace of mind.
