The Recursive team released an automated AI research system that can autonomously complete the research loop, surpassing existing human community solutions on multiple benchmarks. For example, on NanoGPT Speedrun it compressed training time from 79.7 seconds to 77.5 seconds, and on SOL-ExecBench it improved the score to 0.754.
Karpathy open-sourced an experimental project, autoresearch, that lets an AI Agent automatically complete the research loop for small-scale LLM training: modify code, run experiments, evaluate results, and iterate. Humans only need to write the research plan and constraints.
Andrej Karpathy notes that a common first step in his nanochat tutorial (booting up an 8XH100 GPU) would stump beginners, highlighting a barrier to entry in AI development.
