During Sony’s latest[earning report](https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/25q4_sonypre.pdf)the company laid out plans to use AI in game development, despite many other companies facing backlash over AI use\. Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino explained that the company believes AI will help their developers focus on storytelling and AI will increase the volume and diversity of content\.

> At PlayStation, our goal is always to be the best place to play and the best place to publish,” Nishino said\. “We see AI as a powerful tool to help us in this mission\. For our players, this will mean a gaming experience like never before\. More immersion, more adventures, and fresh ways to enjoy their favorite characters\. For our publishers, this will mean an even more efficient production environment and a better discovery to ensure their games reach the right audiences
Sony think AI will “lower the barriers to creation and accelerate development cycles\.” The company wants a meaningful increase in volume and diversity of content it creates\. The plan is to use AI for repetitive workloads and software engineering, 3D Modeling, and animations\.
> Within our studios, game developers are automating repetitive workloads, improving software engineering productivity, and accelerating areas like quality assurance, 3D modeling, and animations through new AI power tools\.

Sony is already using AI to help create 3D facial animations based on data from performance capture\. Internally, PlayStation now has a tool called “Mockingbird” that quickly animates 3D facial models using AI\. However, the company claims they are not replacing human performers\.
> Importantly, we’re not replacing human performers, but rather optimizing how we process the data from these live captures\. With Mockingbird, animation work that would have taken hours can now be completed in a fraction of a second\.
Naughty Dog, San Diego Studio, and others are already adapting new AI based tools\. One example Sony shared was Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered where AI animation tools were used\. In a different example, Sony discussed an AI tool for animating hair in video games\.
> This is often a labor\-intensive process, given the volume of strands that must be created\. Our teams have accelerated this process by taking videos of real hairstyles and having an AI tool output a 3D model, with hundreds of strand models\.

The goal, Sony claims, is to enable their teams to spend less time on manual, high effort tasks, and reinvest that time into building better open worlds and gameplay for players\. In addition to using AI in asset generation and 3D modeling, PlayStation is creating new types of experiences for fans, citing Gran Turismo’s AI\-powered agent Sophy\.
> Taking this further, our world\-class creatives have already shown the ability to create amazing prototypes where NPCs with their own personalities can create a living, dynamic world for the players to explore\.
One of the main concerns gamers have been about the use of GenAI to create assets and concept art\. Nishino addressed this by saying Sony’s creators will remain the top priority\.
> The vision, the design, and the emotional impact of our games will always come from the talent of our studios and performers\. AI is meant to augment their capabilities, not to replace them\.
Apart from game development, Sony is using AI to power some features on the PlayStation Store\. Apparently, AI is being used to route transactions from the PlayStation Store more efficiently over payment networks, generating $700M of incremental revenue\. It is safe to say this is a complete AI takeover of PlayStation, from business to game development\.
Behind the facade, a lot of this is done to cost cut because Sony current AAA development model isn’t sustainable anymore\. Eventually, AI will impact human creators and developers at Sony, affecting existing employees and creating fewer new job at the company\.
