1/ US biotech is in crisis, right before AI should be saving millions.

China is stealing away our industry and has surpassed the US in blockbuster pharma deals.

The next FDA Commissioner must be a fighter, and have a plan to overhaul the agency, beat China, and unleash cures.

2/ America should be the fastest, safest place in the world to deploy clinical AI & get promising cures to patients.

Instead, we are suffocating innovation with a top-down, Soviet-style bureaucracy.

Here are some table stakes for the next FDA leader:

Thanks, Patrick!

You are doing inspiring work in biotech for our civilization, that means a lot coming from you.

If you read the piece you’ll see we understand the speed issue.

But what you might not understand is that unless the next FDA leader is very bold - and yes, a fighter - the sclerotic bureaucracy will over-rule and ignore and outlast her, resisting smarter and faster processes.

I am careful with my words. I have seen many sketchy and purposeful unethical actions to steal away economic activity and to copy and get around patents (and then fast track approval).

That doesn’t mean there isn’t also impressive work going on in China.

But it’s both.

He’s obviously a terrible and hateful guy, on so many levels, bringing in third world base envy as a core campaign value and having a tattoo of the worst is the Nazis, that if you support him you are completely lost about what will help lift up lives in our civilization.

My 15 year-old self might agree with you ;).

Better private solutions could evolve.

But we have to work towards the best solution within the constraints of what’s achievable in our republic as it stands with the laws of the land and the views of Congress, and what CAN get done.

Thanks for this @JTLonsdale — I’ve been having an exhausting argument with biotech VCs for the last week about not offshoring biotech R&D to cheaper scientific labor in China. Sort of getting nowhere I don’t know if it’s possible for tech folks to give a warning about the stupidity of Sequoia China, etc, so we don’t have to learn all this the hard way in biotech:

Biotech is in existential crisisAnyone, who says it’s not is, is having his or her head buried in the sand. It’s my conclusion from running a startup company in both& up to P2 trials since 2011. @JTLonsdale @PeterKolchinsky @jrkelly @pharmabro0782 @JMaraganore @rtnarch

Biotech is an area where you spend billions on research and trials. If somebody can just take and use the results, then you can’t justify the investment next time.

Don’t be retarded.

This is one of the few areas where IP allows our civilization to invest and advance.

Also this part is real

You’re SPOT ON @JTLonsdale ! Thanks for articulating all this so well.
