At UC San Diego, surgeons fitted it with standard laparoscopic tools and teleoperated it through a live gallbladder removal on an animal. The results were published in Nature this week.
The machines they challenge cost about $2 million, weigh 1,800 pounds, and need an operating room built around them.
The surgeons report precision comparable to specialized surgical systems at a fraction of the cost and footprint, deployable anywhere from rural clinics to the battlefield to space.
Surgical robots have always been machines the patient travels to. This is the first one that can walk to the patient.
